There are three main types of PowerLine products available and a streaming audio product. Each with a different available data throughput. Data rates of 14 Mpbs, 85 Mpbs and the newest available are 200 Mbps. They come in the form of either a plug shape or a box shape. They function the same.
Even though these data rates are published one cannot normally get the advertised speed. For example with the 14 Mbps you can get a relatively constant throughput of 5 Mbps, with the 85 Mbps you can get 25 Mbps and the 200 Mbps is just becoming available and has not been rigorously tested by a large number of people. But you can surely expect a minimum of 50 Mbps of data throughput. Of course the speed always depend on several factors like the state of your electrical wiring and if you have a mixture of different data rate products. If you mix a 14 Mbps product with an 85 Mbps product you will get a short fall, you will not be able to get the maximum speed out of the products. Much like how the wireless technology WiFi works. The published speed is never what is actually attainable. One thing to bear in mind when you choose your PowerLine product is the fact that Homeplug certified products built with the Intellon chipset and products with the DS2 chipset under the UPA ARE NOT interoperable. You cannot mix these on your network. Creating seperate networks within your network is possible but the devices will not be able to pass data between themselves.
