Powerline Networking is the technology that allows you to use your existing electrical wiring in your home or office to create a computer network - LAN (Local Area Network). This form is the most common usage of PowerLine technology but there are many other ways you can benefit using this technology. There are an ever-increasing number of products being developed to incorporate PowerLine technology. For example imagine you have a new television and once plugged in it connects automatically to your DVD player, home theatre system and the Internet.
The name PowerLine Networking is just one of many names that people have given to this form of connectivity. Others are Broadband Over PowerLine (BPL), Broadband PowerLine Networking, Ethernet over Powerline and PowerLine Communications (PLC). We have just spoken about this technology in a home or office environment. Another side to this technology is for the connection of complete buildings or even villages to be able to receive the Internet over the already existing electrical wiring. These installations usually require experienced integrators to come to premises and carry out the installation. They are often referred to as Outdoor PowerLine installations - PowerLine Projects. There are many utility companies currently deploying PowerLine solutions. For some example applications click here. |
